Abstract

Social media has extensively permeated our lives, particularly among the youths in Pakistan where we have 24/7 connectivity and access to information, entertainment and connectivity. This paper looks at these platforms being not only a tool that we utilize, but forces that are actively influencing our thought, attention, and behavior. The social media offers important learning, awareness and exposure opportunities to the world, but on the other hand promotes superficial content feeding and instant distraction that undermines focus and enhancing thought processes.
This twofold effect, where on one hand, people know more and are more digital; on the other, more distracted and less attentive, is captured in the discussion. It points out that the available social media is not the problem but its usage. The article ends by showing that there should be a healthy balance we maintain, encouraging mindful use, and incorporating educational awareness which is paramount in ensuring that social media continues to be a good tool and not a negative influence to cognitive development.
