Abstract
So, we are living in a world drowning in data. Every Netflix recommendation, every hospital record, every financial transaction is an additional drop to the ocean of information that have become so vast now that our fastest supercomputers have started to struggle. Quantum Computing emerged as a technology that could finally change the situation by doing things which classical computers are nto capable of doing.
This article breaks down what quantum computing actually is, in plain language anyone can follow. At its heart, quantum computing works through two strange but powerful principles borrowed from quantum physics: superposition, which allows a quantum bit to be both 0 and 1 at the same time instead of one or the other, and entanglement, which links qubits together so they can work as a perfectly coordinated team regardless of distance. Together, these properties allow a quantum computer to explore millions of possibilities simultaneously rather than checking them one by one.
Pakistan is not sitting on the sidelines either. In February 2026, the country hosted its first-ever Quantum Computing Hackathon at the National Centre for Physics in Islamabad, drawing over 950 applicants nationwide. The winning team, led by students from LUMS, developed a quantum algorithm capable of detecting tuberculosis from chest X-rays faster and more accurately than traditional methods which shows a real, local demonstration of what this technology can do right now.
But quantum computing also carries serious risks. Its processing power threatens to break the encryption systems that currently protect our banking, our communications, and our personal data. Pakistan's government has begun responding, launching the Quantum Communications initiative under the Uraan Pakistan vision to build quantum-safe security infrastructure for the country.
