Abstract
The rapid advancement of quantum computing poses a significant threat to current cryptographic systems such as RSA and ECC, which secure modern digital communications. This paper highlights the urgent need for transitioning to post-quantum cryptography (PQC), especially in emerging digital economies like Pakistan. It explains how quantum algorithms, including Shor’s and Grover’s, can break traditional encryption and introduces the concept of “harvest now, decrypt later” as an immediate security concern. The study provides an overview of PQC techniques such as lattice-based, hash-based, and code-based cryptography, along with hybrid security models for gradual migration. It also discusses the potential applications of post-quantum secure communication systems in banking, government, healthcare, and cloud services. Furthermore, the paper identifies key challenges including lack of awareness, skill shortages, policy gaps, and financial constraints. It concludes that early adoption of PQC can enhance security, build trust, and create economic opportunities, positioning Pakistan as a potential leader in future secure communication technologies.
