Future of Work: Why Skills Trump Jobs in the Age of AI How Artificial Intelligence Is Reshaping Careers, Digital Skills and the Workforce in Pakistan

Abstract

The workplace around the world is changing at a revolutionary speed. Digital transformation is happening and it is changing traditional roles in the job market in ways never before experienced. It is moving towards a skills economy where learning skills quickly, interpreting and utilizing new technologies and learning as a lifelong practice will soon outweigh our job title or our degree. This article is about how AI-driven transformation is changing all of our industries, expectations from our work forces and new chances to acquire work for qualified professionals. It includes explanations as to why people look for technical and people skills, how telecommuting/freelance work is more accessible than ever and why an emphasis on continuing learning has become necessary. Special attention is paid to Pakistan's large population of young people and its flourishing digital industries with the opportunity that comes and also the challenges that face us. There are threats of increasing skills gaps and how crucial the need for up skilling efforts, reformation of education and collaboration with humans is highlighted. In the end the author suggests the new key to success is not having one lifetime job but to build and strengthen relevant and portable skills in a world of changing technologies.
