Abstract

Social media has become an inseparable part of daily life, but its addictive design is quietly stealing our attention, time, and mental peace. This article explores how platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube exploit the brain's dopamine system to keep users scrolling endlessly. Drawing on insights from former tech insiders like Tristan Harris and real-world experiments conducted by social media companies, the article reveals how algorithms are designed to manipulate emotions and maximize screen time. It also presents alarming statistics: the average person touches their phone 2,600 times daily, and Asians spend seven hours per day on screens post-COVID. However, this is not merely a critique. The article argues that blaming "bad times" is an excuse, not a solution. It is the personal responsibility of every individual — especially parents — to protect their own minds and their children's. Practical steps are offered, including phone jails, mealtime no-phone policies, digital detox retreats, dumb phones, and community engagement. Ultimately, this article calls for breaking the loop and taking back control — not by abandoning technology, but by using it wisely.
