Abstract

This article investigates the rapidly growing energy footprint of artificial intelligence and the emerging field of green computing as a response. Drawing on data from the International Energy Agency (IEA), which projects global data centre electricity consumption to reach 945 TWh by 2030, the article examines how AI workloads are the single largest driver of this growth. It explores water consumption challenges, breakthrough research from Carnegie Mellon University and Harvard University on energy-efficient hardware and sustainable AI frameworks, and the promise of liquid cooling and algorithmic efficiency techniques such as model distillation and quantisation. The article argues that green computing has moved from an optional ideal to an urgent engineering and ethical necessity for the technology sector in 2026.
