Behind the Screen: The Hidden Power Shaping What We See How Algorithms Shape Perception, Limit Perspectives, and Control Digital Reality in the Age of Personalized Media
Main Article Content
Abstract
In the digital era, social media platforms have become powerful tools that influence how individuals perceive and interact with information. This article explores the hidden role of algorithms in shaping user experiences on platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. These systems analyze user behavior—likes, searches, watch time, and interactions—to create highly personalized content feeds. While this enhances engagement and convenience, it also leads to the formation of “filter bubbles,” where users are repeatedly exposed to similar viewpoints and content. As a result, exposure to diverse perspectives decreases, potentially narrowing critical thinking and reinforcing existing beliefs. Additionally, algorithm-driven content prioritization can contribute to the rapid spread of misinformation and biased understanding of reality. This paper highlights the psychological and social impacts of algorithmic personalization and raises an important question: are users truly in control of their digital experience, or are their perceptions being subtly shaped by unseen systems? The study concludes by emphasizing the need for digital awareness, critical engagement, and responsible use of social media platforms to overcome algorithmic limitations.
