Abstract

This article explores how the growing pressure to earn money early — through freelancing, social media success culture, family expectations, and overdependence on AI tools — is silently weakening the engineering foundation of an entire generation of students. It introduces the concept of Learning Debt: a knowledge gap that forms when shortcuts replace understanding, projects get delivered but comprehension never arrives. Through global industry data, personal observation, and Pakistan's freelancing culture, this article argues that long-term engineering excellence cannot be rushed. The engineers Pakistan needs tomorrow are being hollowed out today — one ununderstood project at a time. This article urges students to think beyond the next client, and to learn before they earn.
