Abstract

Encryption plays an important role in protecting digital communication and personal data in the modern era. Applications such as WhatsApp, iMessage, and email services use end-to-end encryption to secure billions of conversations daily. However, governments in different countries argue that they need backdoor access to encrypted systems for investigations, crime prevention, and national security purposes. This article discusses the debate between security and surveillance regarding government backdoors in encryption. While governments believe backdoors can help law enforcement detect criminal activities and obtain critical evidence, cybersecurity experts warn that weakening encryption can create serious risks. Hackers, cybercriminals, and foreign actors may exploit these vulnerabilities, making sensitive data less secure for ordinary users. Criminals may also switch to alternative encrypted tools, while everyday citizens lose privacy and protection. The article further explains how journalists, abuse survivors, LGBTQ individuals in unsafe environments, and businesses are among the groups most affected by weak encryption. It also highlights safer alternatives suggested by experts, including metadata analysis, court-approved device access, and traditional investigations that do not weaken global digital security. The discussion concludes that encryption is not only about privacy but also about trust, freedom, and secure communication in the digital world.
