Big Data and Business: How Organizations Turn Information into Competitive Advantage Every second, 2.5 billion gigabytes of information is produced across the globe by firms. In the case of Pakistani firms, it does not lie in the availability of this information but rather their ability to convert it into meaningful actions.

Abstract
Every second, businesses across the world produce 2.5 quintillion bytes of data. The challenge for Pakistani firms is not to find data but to derive business intelligence from raw data. This article focuses on big data technologies and their real-world applications, along with barriers Pakistani firms face in adoption. Big data comes in four Vs: Volume (scale requiring distributed computing), Variety (various types of data from different sources), Velocity (speed requiring real-time processing), and Veracity (accuracy of data). Modern firms produce data in petabytes from their transaction databases, customer interaction logs, sensor feeds, or user data. Existing data processing technologies, designed for individual transactions in a single database, are ill-suited to handle this huge variety and volume. Distributed computing frameworks, such as Apache Hadoop and Apache Spark, process data in parallel over a cluster of computers. Apache Kafka is a framework that handles streams of data, and scalable storage solutions such as HDFS and cloud storage are used as a backbone. Such systems transform raw data into information that supports decision-making.
